Cottage - John Lafarge ?

I have spoken to my colleague who was brought up in Chobham and he believes this house could be Gracious Pond Farm in Gracious Pond Rd.
If it is that house it is today a thatched house.
I hope this helps.
Kind regards

James Heron

Gracious Pond Farm, Gracious Pond Road, Chobham, WOKING, Surrey, GU24 8

A PAINTING OF A FARMHOUSE

Thank you for your e-mail of 3 September and for the attached image.

A search has been made in the library and map collections, but I regret that I have been unable to make any kind of identification.  There is no, defined, area, known as ‘Chobham Woods’.

Your painting is clearly much older than 1934.  It probably, by its style, dates to the last quarter of the C19th.  The style of  Price’s label suggests c. 1900.

You say, in your email, that you have spoken to the previous owner, from whom, presumably, you actually bought the painting?  Did he or she given any reason why they thought it might be at Chobham?

The style of architecture does not give much away, since it is not particularly distinctive and could be just about anywhere.  I do wonder whether having it in colour might give a few more clues, in its construction, for instance, but I cannot guarantee it.

Unfortunately, in the intervening hundred or so years, many old houses such as this, have been demolished, or rebuilt so much as to be unrecognisable and this makes any kind of identification even more difficult, I am afraid.

I cannot see any signature on the painting.  I wonder if you have thought about taking out of its frame, on the offchance that it might have writing –perhaps even a title, on the back.  I have come across examples of this before.

Examination of early editions of sheet X.16 of the 25” Ordnance Survey, show a set of buildings once called New House Farm, now Westways Farm.  The outbuildings shown on the map, appear to show a very close layout to that suggested in the  painting.  Unfortunately, I cannot confirm this, since all of them have been long since demolished, only the farm house, which does not appear in the painting, is left standing.

If you think this might be worth pursuing, or if they may be able to help otherwise,I suggest you contact Chobham Museum.  They do not appear to have an email address so you may need to write:-
Chobham Museum, Benhams Corner, Bagshot Road, Chobham, Surrey, GU24 8BP, UK

I am sorry I cannot, otherwise, be of help, but I hope this information is useful to your research.

If you are able to find further information about the picture, or are able to actually identify it, please contact me, because I would be most interested to know.

This enquiry has been answered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act (2000), Data Protection Act (1998) and the Environmental Information Regulations.

Yours sincerely
